Most people overcomplicate their first font build. The best first pass is fast, intentional, and focused on consistency over perfection.
Start with one style lane
Pick either geometric or handwritten energy before you draw your first glyph. Switching style midstream creates spacing and rhythm issues that are hard to repair later.
- Draw anchors first: H, O, n, o, a, e
- Set baseline and x-height before detail work
- Rebuild repeated shapes instead of redrawing every letter
Build rhythm before decoration
Use quick words like minimum and headline to test joins and spacing. If those words feel balanced, the rest of your character set will be far easier to finish.
